There are numerous differences between flatworms, roundworms, and segmented worms, both externally and internally. Flatworms is part of the phylum named Platyhelminthes, that is part of kingdom Animalia. They are usually soft and flat, and they also have internal organ systems and tissues. Flatworms are the simplest organisms that have three embryonic germ layers, are bilaterally symmetrical, and have the feature of cephalization. Cephalization is the concentration of sensory organs and some other organs at the anterior end of the body, or the front end. This forms a head and a brain both during evolution and in the course of a developing embryo. Flatworms have a digestive cavity with just one opening, which is its mouth. Very close to the mouth is muscular tube that is called a pharynx that pumps into the digestive cavity. Free-living flatworms have several ganglia, which are just…

Planaria are triploblastic acoelmate flatworms that inahabit marine and terrestrial environments and belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes. Though they are relatively complex creatures, as they possess an extremely branched gastrovascular cavity, a brain, hermaphroditic reproductive abilities, Planaria are best known for their regenerative capabilities (Rink, 2012). This is not a recent discovery, however. Peter Simon Pallas first described this regeneration 230 years ago in 1766, and Dalyell…

Introduction: Planarians are free-living aquatic flatworms that posses remarkable regeneration abilities in addition to its distinct negative phototaxis behavior. A wealth of research studies has thoroughly examined its photophobic behavior under different wave frequencies and light conditions. Planarian are highly sensitive to white light and wavelengths of high frequencies, blue-green range ( Paskin TR, 2014). Two basic pigment-cup eyes situated in the head region govern its photophobic…

The first source that I found would be helpful for the research because it talks about planarian. The article talks about their regeneration. They focus about the cells, epidermis, and s phase of their body. It has a clear explanation of how they regenerate and produce new head or tail. Also, talks about their reproduction asexually. This will have clear explanation on why the flatworm from the lab multiplied. The second source would be helpful for the research because it shows all the steps on…

During this lab flatworms and earthworms anatomy and physiology were examined. Unfortunately as the experiment continued with the bring home flatworm, it died in my house as it was too warm in my room and on the shaded part of my desk. The planetarium was cut up in two segments in order to see whether the anterior or posterior side of the flatworm would regenerate the fastest. My hypothesis was as stated, if the flatworm was cut above the pharynx in the branched gastrovascular cavity (before the…

Introduction Planaria are a type of flatworms that possess a mammalian nervous system and the ability to regenerate skin cells. The flatworms are used in a variety of experiments, which include chemical responses and experiments upon the regeneration process. When combined with addictive drugs and chemicals, such as cocaine and ethanol, the planaria display paroxysms, motor effects, and c shaped movements (Tallarida et al 2014). The planaria demonstrate their applicability of their systems in…

Project Name: The effect of sugar and salt solution on the chemotaxis of planarians Introduction Questions: The research question is, “What is the effect of sugar and salt solution on the chemotaxis of planaria?” This research question is worth asking to see if planarians have an affinity toward salt or sugar solutions. By studying different types of organisms, we are better able to see the type of environment that organisms like to live in. This allows us to have a better understanding…

This creates a large significance in planaria research because the research can be used to fix issues in stem cell development. This research, conducted by J.Rink, also mentions that the same stem cells found in planaria are also beginning to be found in organisms classified in Annelida, raising the question if this experiment could be conducted on annelids. Through evolution, Annelids now also have similar neoblasts (Rink 2012). Research also suggests that the evolution of sponges may take a…

I will be writing an informative paper about parasitic flatworms. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines Parasitism as an animal or plant that lives in or on another animal or plant and gets food or protection from it. S. haematobium is the parasitic disease caused by parasitic worms that could infect the urinary tract or intestines. In those who have been infected for a good amount of time liver damage, kidney failure and infertility may occur. The disease is usually spread by contact, water…
