The playing experience is a “complex interaction between the player and the game . . . therefore, video games are simultaneously literature-machines besides being ludic machines” (DON’T KNOW FUCK). Free roam games are useful for teaching this. The Final Fantasy series consists of a collection of heavily narrative-oriented free roam games that fall under the genre of science fiction and fantasy. Final Fantasy VII, an installment of the series, allows players to transport across Gaia, the name of its virtual world, and explore it through various side quests and interactions with non-playable characters (NPCs). As players follow the narrative mainly through operating their playable character, they can connect with and diminish the boundaries between them—a term called experience taking. As players are more engaged in experience taking, they also become more aware of character development. For example, dynamic characters become emphasized as the player vicariously lives through their character. From player Jason Schreier’s experience with Final Fantasy VII, “[he] watched Cloud and Tifa grow up as [he was] growing up. [He] sympathized with their mistakes and wished [he] could be as strong as they were” (Schreier).
