Property owners were later allowed to join, which eventually became a body of elected representatives. Roger Williams, a Puritan Separatist, bought land from the Indians and founded Providence, Rhode Island, the most free and democratic of the colonies in 1631. All religions were welcome, and could be given citizenship by a majority vote. Williams believed that all faiths were equal, even those of the Indians. In 1636, Thomas Hooker and three congregations left to Connecticut and created a self-governing colony. The land of what is now New Hampshire and Maine was given to Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Captain John Mason in 1622. Mason and Gorges divided the land in 1629, Mason taking New Hampshire and Gorges taking Maine. In the 1640s, Massachusetts got too big for it’s britches and took control of New Hampshire, then parts of Maine in the 1650s. Judges ruled against Massachusetts in 1979, so New Hampshire became a royal colony. Maine was incorporated into Massachusetts in 1691. After New York was claimed for the English, the land between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers was given to two men, Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley, and was named Jersey.
