Beginnings of the Sport The history of fencing dates back close to five thousand years originating in both Japan and Egypt. In fact, in Europe the general rules of fencing were used even further back close to fourteen thousand years ago! They would use blunted sabres and would use those for sword play. Fencing then became more and more popular in Italy towards the 15th century. Schools were made to teach fencing which then became increasingly popular in England, France, and Spain. One of which is that in fencing there are three different forms of the blunted sword. Those three forms of the weapon are the epee, foil, and sabre.
