    genre. Rios was born in the Bronx, New York City by his two Puerto Rican parents. He grew up in the South Bronx within a pre-dominantly Puerto Rican community. However, he did not have the easiest childhood as his father died earlier in his life and he witnessed his mother's drug abuse. At the age of 15, he dropped out of high school and was kicked out of his house. During this time, Rios started developing an interest in rapping and break dancing. In 1989, Rios went under the name 'Big Moon Dog' and created a rap group called Full-A-Clips. Through his success with the group, he was able to meet another Puerto Rican artist from the Bronx named Fat Joe. There interaction turned into a strong friendship, allowing them to collaboration in each other's work. Rios made a commercial debut in Fat Joe's second album, Jealous One's Envy. Fat Joe noticed Rios' talent and he managed to persuade Loud Records in signing a contract with him. With this business, he received the name, Big Pun. In 1998, Big Pun released his first solo album, Capital Punishment. This album was well-received, selling over two million copies. It also made it on the Billboard 200 charts, reaching as high as #5 on the list. However, it was #1 on the 'Top R&B Albums' chart for two weeks. The album was so successful that was able to be nominated for 'Best Rap Album' at the 1999 Grammy Awards.
