In January 2008, Kirsten Haglund was crowned Miss America. Through this competition, she was able to open up about her teen struggle with anorexia. From a young age, Haglund was struggling from insecure thoughts, but when she began going to a very competitive ballet school, those thoughts became real. In Louie’s running career and war experience, he also struggled with fitting in, survival, and persecution. Through both of their victories, Kristian Haglund and Louie Zamperini have been able to find Christ again, and continued to live their lives for Him. When Haglund first began attending the competitive ballet school, she realized she looked nothing like the girls around her. She would let herself eat cookies, desserts, and fried foods, but never saw any of the other girls eating those things. Because ballet was the only thing Haglund felt successful in, she knew she had to look like the other girls. Haglund then began going on diets, thinking that dieting was the only way she could advance in life. The day that she threw away her whole lunch, Haglund felt proud of herself. She started making up rules in her mind that carbs weren't good and fats were not good, and the list kept getting longer. Soon, the eating disorder had become a list of rules just like ballet.
