I consider music to be one of the most influential things in my life. It has always been something that I continually look to for comfort and solace. I would say that being in band is in the forefront as far as what has shaped me into the person that I am today. As a result, I have decided to become a music educator in order to hopefully show others the impact that music can make on them as well. My mother was a flute player when she was a kid, and my grandmother played flute and clarinet as…
Family of Music When the term orchestra is defined, it is stated to be a group of instruments, especially on combining string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections and playing classical music. But it is much more than just a group of instruments. More like a family of instruments, and when together they make beautiful classical music for everyone to enjoy. The orchestra is composed of four major instrument families, the string family, the woodwind family, the brass family, and the percussion…
Growing up, my life revolved around music. My mother, a waitress and my father a bassist. I pretty much grew up in restaurants and bars, listening to my dad play songs Keith Richards wrote 30 years ago. Living in a house with more vinyls than square feet, I learned to love every genre of music. My parents went to every live concert they could go to; Aerosmith, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, you name it my parents were in the crowd. When I was ten my mom told me about this great guitar…
From Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to Mary Had a Little Lamb, everyone has been exposed to music from a young age. In fact, some people pursue a musical career from the early exposure and influence. They find a need to be musically inclined, but don’t know how to be. Therefore, the perfect option is being in a concert band or orchestra. Band and orchestra are similar in the ways that both contain instruments, both produce music, and both have conductors. However, they are different with the type…
On October 17, I was able to observe Ryan Anderson’s junior and senior high band. This was an eye opening experience because of the differences he ran his band. Dover-Eyota Middle and High is a Grammy nominated band program, so this was a great opportunity to see a band outside of Tennessee. Mr. Anderson did utilize the room in a big way. Firstly, he purposefully spread everyone in the room out. In the middle of the ensemble, there was an aisle so he would be able to walk from the podium to the…
These instruments include the flute, the oboe, the English horn, the bassoon, the clarinet. The brass section consists of instruments whose sound is traditionally made by buzzing into a mouthpiece. This includes the trumpet, the French horn, the euphonium and the tuba. The final section is the percussion instruments, whose sound is made by striking two objects together. This includes the piano (and its relatives the harpsichord and clavichord), the xylophone and marimba, the chimes, the timpani…

Music is the essence of my life. On a typical night while doing homework, I immerse myself in the music of great composers such as Strauss, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. One might think this is atypical behavior for an eighteen-year-old boy—they would be right: none of my friends indulge in this behavior. Melodies constantly stream through my head and have a profound impact on my mood. Music can change your mood in an instant if you let it. This is evident from the juxtaposition of…
Entrepreneurs create opportunities for themselves, are risk takers, innovative, creative, always favor challenges, and are highly optimistic. These people have the skills and are courageous and daring enough to take good new ideas to market and make the right decisions to make the idea profitable. So for us, musicians, being an entrepreneur thinker is very important for us in order to make a living. There are so many careers in music out there for us, for example, writing and production…
There are certain circles within the music world that hold firm to the belief that this art form is of the purest and most abstract, and should remain so, while others think music should remain open to as many people as possible. Within the context of the 21st century, the later positon has become increasingly important to adopt, not only for the continued success of this art form, but to inspire and motivate positive change in the world. The current project under consideration, titled Divided…
