    Apollo 13 Essay

born, that was until there was a loud bang that made the spacecraft moan and shudder! At first, the three astronauts came to the conclusion that a meteor had hit them. What had actually happened was that when they were doing the routine task to turn on the fans inside the oxygen tanks, faulty wiring in an oxygen tank triggered an explosion. The explosion drained the spacecraft’s power and sent the oxygen supply venting into space. In the beginning, their mission was to land on the moon and collect samples, but now with everything that happened, the astronauts and the engineers at Mission Control had a new goal which was to bring all three astronauts home safely. In the article it says, “At Mission Control in Houston, flight director Gene Kranz gathered his engineers. These men knew Apollo 13’s systems better than they knew their own bedrooms. Now they would do everything in their power to bring the astronauts home.” This quote shows that no matter how much they wanted to complete their first mission, they were still going to do everything in their power to get all three men home safely. Thankfully both engineers and the astronauts came up with the idea to use the LEM as a lifeboat! Unfortunately, when the astronauts and the engineers were trying to achieve their new goal, they were faced with difficult challenges. First of all, the LEM didn’t have enough power or water to last four days. The men were shivering because they had to turn off all systems but the most critical…
