The prevalent popularity of the potency of this drug stems from its gradual elimination from the body that enables the treatment of infections for several days of single administration on a daily basis. As previously mentioned, this new agent is derived from erythromycin through a process that involves incorporating nitrogen atom into the lactone ring, which makes the lactone ring to become 15-membered. 1. Describe 3 targets of antibiotics, why each target is unique to the particular bacteria, and under what circumstance the bacteria could be resistant to that particular drug. (5 pts) As the name implies 50s subunit protein synthesis inhibitors such as erythromycin inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the 23S rRNA molecule of the bacterial ribosome. This ultimately acts to block the exit of the growing peptide chain. It should be noted that gram+ bacteria more…

Kanamycin was expected to have the largest zone of inhibition but ended up with a diameter of 3.5 centimeters. Erythromycin was not expected to be the most effective but ended up with a zone of inhibition of 4 centimeters. On the other hand, Tetracycline had a zone of inhibition of 0.5 centimeters, and the control (just a disk of filler paper) had a 0-centimeter zone of inhibition. Qualitatively, the differences were obvious; Kanamycin and Erythromycin both had large circles surrounding the…

We measured the zone of inhibition after a week to observe which antibiotic Enterococcus faecalis is most sensitive to. My hypothesis is that Enterococcus faecalis will have varying levels of sensitivity to different types of antibiotics by expressing different size of zone of inhibition. If neomycin, tetracycline, and erythromycin are individually applied to a colony of Enterococcus faecalis, then the zone of inhibition will be highest to lowest in the order of neomycin, erythromycin, and…

Two antibiotic disks of 15 micrograms of erythromycin were added to the plate. The plates were allowed to incubate for 48 hours at 37C to allow the first round of exposure of the bacteria to the antibiotic. After incubation, the zone of inhibition was observed, and the diameter was measured with a ruler. The zone of inhibition is a…
