    In males, according to Giuliano M.D, PD, erection is associated with the arousal and continues until the orgasm phase (Giuliano 2011). The erection process seems to be tied to the reactions of smooth muscles, which is dependent on the parasympathetic system where nitric oxide activates the process (Giuliano 2011). In desire the hypothalamus seemed to be the dominant aspect of the brain that is activated but the muscles and parasympathetic system are more in control. It is interesting to see the parasympathetic system in regards to erection as it is usually known for being used for rest and digestion. Nitric oxide is released by neurons when they are stimulated and then determine the blood flow of the brain (Kalat 1998). This is the case with erection, as the brain may be stimulated by mental or visual images or by a reflex which is connect to the release of nitric oxide. In females, the clitoris, labia, periurethral glans, nipples, and pelvic musculature seem to be area where arousal is expressed (Levin 2002). The process seems to also include the release of nitric oxide but also it includes another neurotransmitter referred to as vipergic according to Levin.
