    • 4 Pages

Rhetoric, it has been around since before ancient Greece and it is one of the most important components of literature and communication, yet many people have no understanding of it, or even what it is. This may be due to the fact that rhetoric has deep and complicated concepts with so many different perspectives to look at it, or because it is in essence actually so simple. Creating a concrete definition of rhetoric would be extremely difficult because of the many different meanings it has behind it. But when it comes down to it, in its simplest form rhetoric is how and why we communicate our ideas/believes/etc., whether it be through writing, speaking, or a combination of the two. Rhetoric works its way into our lives effortlessly, embodying all forms of human communication. I understand why rhetoric works due to the extensive research/readings I have done on it, as well as it constants use and application in my everyday life. Essentially, any time you have a purpose in communicating something with an audience, no matter how big or small, you use rhetoric in doing so. As rhetorician Kenneth Burke once said, “Wherever there is persuasion, there is rhetoric. And wherever there is ‘meaning,’ there is ‘persuasion…” (Caroll 47). “Rhetoric is only used in English class or when writing essays,” this idea is falsely…

This past essay has helped me work towards my goal of developing new skills to create a stronger thesis. The enthymeme thesis is weird. I don’t feel like it helps the essay or helps you to structure your essay. I can see how one main idea, instead of three ideas, to structure your essay around is convenient, but I’m still not so sure about the enthymeme. Hopefully, this next essay can help to see the value in this form of a thesis. I honestly may email my senior year AP English Language and…

What are the two ways an enthymeme might be refuted? One of the two ways an enthymeme can be refuted is to attack you opponent’s own statement. Aristotle gives the example of if your opponent’s enthymeme should assert that love is always good, you can object to this by saying all want is an evil. He also mentions by making the particular one that there would be no talk of Caunian love if there were not evil loves as well as good ones (Aristotle, pg. 133). The second way to refute an enthymeme…
