She is not proud of her legacy but intrigued by the fallacy of what it means to be one of African descent. Cultural arts, jewelry and clothing are presumably valuable and become adorned by Dee. Charmed with the idea of her new found knowledge of her ancestry, Dee changes her birth name to "Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo". Dee executes to her mother that her given name is dead, "I couldn't bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me." The birth name given to Dee was name given to her as part of the family legacy. Dee's decision to change her name highlights her confusion on her heritage and its value. The appearance of Dee's real heritage in her eyes has passed away and is not a history that should be passed on from generation to generation.
