For all of its history, China had been a patriarchy in which men dominated politically and socially. The Chinese assigned gender roles to each gender and often associated men with the yang energy which is seen as powerful compared to that of the weak yin energy which is assigned to women. According to an ancient dictum from Shangshu, “Hens should not announce the dawn” (McMahon). Examples of other such sayings from ancient times included: “‘If no distinction is made between male and female, it will be a case of two masters. If there are two masters, then all is lost’” (McMahon).
