Drinking was always a part of my life until one night that changed everything. It was a long night that into the next day. I started drinking when I was 14 and it steadily escalated into something out of control. In school I never really fit and was usually teased for different reasons. This eventually led to me becoming depressed. I don’t remember why I decided to try alcohol just that in the moments when I would drink I felt better about life. This steadily became more as getting a hold of alcohol became easier the older I was. On August 9th, 2012 that came to a screeching halt. The story I’m about tell was in the wake of another significant part of my life. Approximately 6 months prior I was engaged to a woman I loved. This changed the night she got black out drunk and tried to strangle me. That event would lead me to 6 months of heavy drinking. The night began with my waiting for my girlfriend to show up and spend time with me. My best friend and two of her children were there as she was living with me off and on. After she arrived we sat around my living room listening to music and started drinking beer. Things were going smoothly thus far. After maybe an hour we went down to my girlfriend’s car and smoked a joint. This was one of the few times I actually felt anything from it. After this we proceeded back upstairs where we continued drinking. A short while later my best friend asked if my girlfriend and I would watch the kids while she went out to the…

The stories written about the immigrants and their immigration experiences in Sacrificing Families illustrate this context poetically. In Sacrificing Families, Salvadoran parents (Abrego’s research subjects) migrated to the U.S. because they were pushed out due economic reasons (mothers) and political violence (fathers) (Abrego, 2014, p. 32). In Gloria’s story, Gloria told Abrego, “So, by coming [to the U.S.], the idea was that I’d work and help them all. I was not going to do anything here [in…

As an ironic story that focuses on many problems dealing with philosophy and theology, Voltaire’s “Candide” stands to clarify and possibly teach a lesson to the people that would hold too much faith in these philosophies. Many catastrophic events happen to the lead character, Candide, as well as just about every other character in the story, in order to focus on the problems that lie in detaching yourself from responsibility of their own actions leaving it to God, to fate, or to nature when the…

determining on which culture I wanted to be closely associated with. I have felt unsatisfied with conforming to Mexican-American culture all throughout my education so far and wanted to feel accepted while expressing myself in my Central American lifestyle that felt extremely right to me.
