    book or two from the guards. Baca continued to teach himself how to read and write and told the guards he wasn’t doing any work in the prison until he was allowed to get his G.E.D. This did not go over well, and Baca spent a great deal of his time in solitary confinement. Baca received beatings on a regular basis, and sometimes his food was withheld. He survived there mentally by writing poetry and reading and learning the correct uses of grammar. The first week of college is when I felt alive and terrified at the same time, but astounded by how much I was enjoying my first semester. I was ready to learn and become my own individual. I’m currently in my second semester at Merritt College and have a long way to go. I am still on my own educational journey and excited to learn as much as I am capable of. My reading and writing skills have greatly improved by the help of my college Professors, and I have my own incentive to read more instead of watching television, and motivate myself to achieve little goals along the way, like learning a couple new words each month. Malcolm X (who unfortunately died February, 1965) became a human rights activist after self-educating himself while in prison, and Baca achieved his goal of becoming a famous poet who still travels around the world today and speaks at many universities. Baca and Malcolm X inspired many people’s lives and continue to do so today. I want to be an inspiration to others around me, and help people who struggle like…
