When the warm weather hits like a punch in the gut, people flock to closest beach with enough food to feed an entire zoo. During the sunny day, beach goers participate in common activities such as picnics, feeding seagulls, and enjoying the refreshing feeling of the cold, salty water of the ocean against their sun kissed skin. However, at the end of the day, the beach is covered in crud that was left behind. David Barry finds situations like these infuriating. To empathise his hatred of littering, Barry wrote the short story “A Couple of Really Neat Guys”, which uses hyperbole and eccentric characters to convey that littering is wrong. In “A Couple of Really Neat Guys”, Barry uses hyperbole to describe “The Picnic People from Hell”. By using hyperbole, Barry empathises how much garbage is within parks, beaches, and other public locations. For instance, Barry explains that people in public places are “cranking out potato-chip bags and beer cans and sandwich wrappers and chicken bones and dirty diapers weighing more than the infant that generated them” (1). By using the hyperbole “cranking out”, Barry makes it seem like people are just throwing trash on the ground, which in some cases, is what happens. Barry also uses hyperbole when he says “[The Picnic People from Hell] have enough…

How these individuals are often dehumanized to force conformity is played out by the directives of the Big Nurse and the institutional staff as they use any discerning technique in their arsenal to control those who do not wish to be transformed to their standards.…

Mill’s praise of eccentricity as a means of self-cultivation illuminates the philosopher’s unique view of discovering one’s self as a form of education. To break the chains of tradition and social authority and embrace one’s eccentricity seems, to Mill, to be a duty to both an individual and mankind. As Mill tersely claimed, “the despotism of custom everywhere is the standing hindrance to human advancement” (Mills, p.69). If an individual subscribes to Mill’s view on individuality, then they…
