When Monique W. Morris wrote Sexual Violence and the Criminalization of Black Women and Girls for Ebony magazine, she expounded on this, stating “The constant feeling of unsafety plagues too many women and girls who are expected to take their abuse like women and who are expected to … hide in shame from the suggestion that their question for wholeness…
It was a long summer’s evening in Colorado Springs, July 03, 1975. The air was warm and still, radiating through my chest and embracing my tanned arms and legs. Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” and Rod Stewart’s “Maggie Mae” were spinning on the AM station of my friend Paul’s Earl Schrieb freshly-painted turquoise-blue Karmann Ghia. “When you’re down and troubled, and you need a helping hand…” I felt accomplished to have memorized each song and with a convincing smile confidently sang the…
and there are two lines used to describe her appearance. “Snow-White lay there in the coffin a long, long time, and she did not decay, but looked like she was asleep, for she was still as white as snow and as red as blood, and as black-haired as ebony wood.” (Grimm 155) It is also used in Snow-White to allow for understanding of the more complex ideas that a young listener would need. “This startled the queen, for she knew that the mirror did not lie, and she realized that the huntsman had…
♡ Chapter 1 ♡ The Princess of Audacity My eyes flutter open and I immediately shut them again wishing myself back into a dream. Even though I can’t remember what I was dreaming about exactly, I know that any dream good or bad would be better than my real life. I can hear the soft whisper of voices behind my door and know that if I don’t get up now on my own, I’ll be woken up in a matter of minutes. I slowly sit up and let out a sigh. The stale air circulating through my room has a cold bite…
stranger. And so this was part of the new world Japes had landed in. Hanging with these girls most definitely put a chill down his spine, and in fact the servers who befriended him the most turned out to be the black servers. He knew what it felt like to be discriminated against, as his unusually narrow build and sunken chest became the object of ridicule throughout his youth. Well-honed psychological lines of defense had been fully developed by this point in his life, and certainly his new…
Ragwell stood in the half-open doorway, burnished by the flickering candlelight within. As they entered, Seer Borys fastened the great ebony doors with a thud. The empress sat behind her desk, scribbling furiously at a parchment she had taken from the tilting stacks. Always writing, thought Hunter, and the memories brought a sliver of a smile to his lips. He half-remembered the stories she had penned as they grew up together, eons ago, and for a moment he considered inquiring after them. No, he…
Uncharted waters, unknown species and places, was what one was in for if a sailor during the Age of Exploration. Imagine leaving home with only the hope of surviving, and coming out on top. This was exactly what the sailors of the fourteenth and fifteenth century were thinking as they left for expeditions with naval leaders such as Columbus and Zheng He. Although Columbus and Zheng He set out working for expansion, the two had different sailing cultures and indigenous interactions which…
Introduction My interests in 1970s fashion lead me to interview my mother, Cynthia Cartwright (Cindy) who was a teenager during this period. Nevertheless, the 1970s were also a time of media influences, like music, television, and magazines. Media was an influence that reached Cindy. An African American teenage girl from St. Louis, Missouri, with not many examples…

This growing confidence and struggle for black identity led to a new widespread celebration of blackness. The Ebony magazines from the 1970’s featured advertisements that declared a new “Beautiful Black.” The May issue in 1970 encouraged both black men and women to embrace their natural beauty. For example, some commercials displayed black men and women with afros, showcasing their natural hair instead of straightening it out. One article even wrote of a beauty queen, Miss “Black America,” who…
