Their bright colors, readiness to nest in boxes, and close proximity make them a prime choice for study. This exact bluebird population has been previously tested to have a low parasitic prevalence, ruling out the parasite hypothesis (Carleton, Mertins, & Yabsley, 2012). Both parents equally engage in protection and feeding, so both sexes have equal chance to remove fecal sacs on feeding trips. I have hypothesized that the female hormones that influence brooding and parental behaviors (prolactin), in which males do not have as high of levels at the onset of hatch, could influence females to remove fecal sacs and feed their young more. To test this, not only will I use females as one set of controls to compare to non-hormone implanted males but also to compare to males with increased levels of prolactin. These males will be given similar quantities to females…
The typical breeding season of Eastern Bluebirds typically begins when they lay their first egg around the beginning of April and their last egg towards the final days of that month (Hall, 2013). The nestlings will not start fledging until early May, although there is variation until early September. We understand from researching the process of fecal sac removal that the fecal sacs will most likely not be removed until the first few weeks after hatching. The longer days of late spring and early…
Greg Castillo’s article examines how the United States used displays of lavish and modern consumerism, as an effective tool in the fight against communism. The thesis of the article is that the desire for consumer goods is, at least, partially responsible for causing unrest in the Eastern Bloc and exposed how different the Soviet’s communist tenets were from what humans’ desire. In the introduction of Greg’s article, he speaks of a fictitious account published in 1951 by sociologist David…
Unity Party, it was revealed that Stalin believed that he could gain control over a unified Soviet Germany through efforts towards sabotaging and undermining British and American efforts towards rebuilding of the German state and this would eventually lead to their withdraw from the region. He did not view France as much of a tactical threat within this regard. This plan ultimately did not succeed. As a puppet of the Soviet Union, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany took their orders from the…
Poland had suffered a great deal after Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded in 1939. At the meeting, the leaders discussed and tried to come up with a solution that would benefit the alliance. The President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt expressed how he wished for a free Poland and to see “the creation of a representative government which could have the support of all the great powers and which could be composed of representatives of the principal parties of Poland” . Joseph…
government in Eastern Europe at a time, where everyone was poor, became every citizen’s worst nightmare. Drakulić, Slavenka’s, How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed (1992), describes the struggle of Eastern European citizens, specifically women in the fight to end communism. Slavenka Drakulić was a Croatian journalist who travelled through various countries such as Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia East Germany, and Bulgaria, spending time with women and listening to their life stories,…
Frederick Taylor author of The Berlin Wall: A World Divided 1961-1989 written in 2007, brings to the front an almost forgotten event in history. He writes an in depth novel of what precipitated the events before the wall was built, and after it was torn down. Taylor gives a thorough account of the happenings, and with the use of evidence, personal account, interviews, and opinion he gives a delightful and at time somewhat controversial account of the Berlin Wall. The author gives account of the…
Stalin viewed this as American Imperialism and declined any aid for Western European countries under Soviet control . The Marshal Plan threatened Stalin as many of the European countries who were destroyed as a result of WWII were accepting the United States’ capitalist money. This would create a strong allegiance between the United States and poor European countries, this allows capitalism to appear to be the superior system to the poor countries. Communism now had little chance of spreading to…
The Berlin Journal by Robert Darnton provides an account on the reunification of East and West Berlin. Throughout the journal, Darnton reveals how confronting the past is an important step in moving forward. Darnton also examines the different meanings the Berlin Wall symbolized for East and West Berliners. Finally, the effects of reunification on the economic system were a concern among East Berliners as they did not want to let go of socialism. The three major themes in Darnton’s Berlin…
Japanese troops would surrender to the Chinese. Vietnam would also temporarily be partitioned for convenience among many other things. During the conference, Harry Truman told Joseph Stalin about a new weapon. Japan, at the end of the conference, was given the choice to either surrender or basically be destroyed. The Potsdam Conference was actually delayed so that Truman could test the Atomic Bomb. The Soviets then moved quickly and annexed as many countries into their control. The Yalta…
