    This goal should be completed with an extra swallow, which is a compensatory strategy to help clear the pharyngeal passageway. Compensatory strategies should be used with the different exercises in order to form a holistic approach to Elliot’s dysphagia treatment. This particular strategy is the preferred compensatory approach because the others may not be beneficial and may actually increase Elliot’s chances of aspiration. For instance, another compensation, the chin tuck, can actually push the residue into the laryngeal vestibule. The use of the effortful swallow is commonly used with the extra swallow to ensure that the residue is effectively cleared from the pharyngeal walls and the pyriform sinuses, which were noted as areas of concern in Elliot’s MBS. Short Term Goal 3 ¬ Elliot will complete daily lingual exercises, such as the tongue elevation and the tongue sweep, to increase the overall coordination with moderate verbal and visual cues with 80% effectiveness for functional bolus formation and ultimately to reduce the risk aspiration. A common issue noted in the MBS for Elliot was that there were issues with his bolus formation, weak tongue base, and poor lingual coordination, which seemed to play an important role in his oral dysphagia. Thus, this should be addressed in the goals in order to assist him in all of the stages of swallowing, including the oral stage.
