I had experienced the influence of my previous drum majors, and I wanted to do the same for everyone else. The process for becoming drum major starts with an interview, and the marching band staff asks typical questions; “Why do you want to be drum major?” “What will you do for the band?” “How will you deal with problems within the band?” But there was one question in particular that really stood out to me, “What sets you apart from the other candidates?” I thought about what I was going to say, but then my answer was simple. I told them that while I may not be the best conductor now I have the leadership and I know that I will give 110% every day to this band. I will put in the effort and the time to be the best, and to make the band the best, and that is exactly what I did. I encouraged everyone to improve themselves with each run through of the show, and I became better with them. Being drum major gave me a confidence that I had not felt before. With each minute that I spent on the podium I became surer of my abilities as a conductor and a leader. I knew that I was chosen for a reason and that I was not going to let my directors or my fellow band members down. Drum major is a title, but while I may not carry that title past high school, I will always carry the experiences and the drive that it gave me to be the best that I…

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” -- John C. Maxwell. Being the drum major this past year, I have learned a lot about being a leader within the band. I would like to continue this position so I can keep the band on the great path it seems to follow. Leaders shouldn’t be perfect, that is the worse possible thing for them to be. They need to be able to make mistakes, learn from them, and fix them. That shows others that leaders make mistakes too, and it…
