Did research on what males and females look like. We observed the frozen flies. On the first week we used fly nap as an anesthetic for the flies and waiting for them to fall asleep. We sexed the flies and put 10 male and 10 female into a tube. We provided them with food and a sponge to allow oxygen to flow in and out of the tube. The males were Wild type and the Females were type C. After one week we came back to several pupa larva and parents that were active. We once again sedated them with…
Creating food: Before making the food, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly. After washing your hands, make sure to wipe down your station before using it. There are alcohol spray bottles throughout the lab. Spray it in your area and use the paper towels to wipe it down. Obtain a clean polystyrene vial and fill one eighth of the tube with dry food. The fly food was purchased from the Carolina Biological Supply company. Add about 9 ml of water to the dry food and gently roll the vial five…
Restriction enzymes are used to manipulate DNA sequences to create recombinant DNA by first cutting up the foreign DNA in order to protect the bacteria cell against invading DNA from other organisms. The enzyme is very specific when it comes to identifying a specific DNA sequence. When the enzyme identifies the specific DNA sequence it cuts both DNA strands at specific points at the restriction site. Lastly, the DNA ligase joins the DNA from two different sources and produces a recombinant DNA…
Ways to discover biological immortality and slowing down ageing process Ageing is simply the matter of our bodies physically getting old and it has environmental and genetic causes. As we get older we tend to develop and maintain some habits which can affect our health either positively or negatively and this represents the accumulation of changes in a person over time. Biological immortality is a term used by biologists to distinguish cells that are not subject to the Hayflick limit. There are…
Species And Why it Matters If They Become Extinct According to the famous definition by Ernst Mayr, a species is said to be “a group of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups (Ridley)”. This quotation defines the biological species concept that is a largely accepted definition of a species. The human population is increasingly becoming a reckless civilization with no regard for the actions we follow therefore the concept of a species becoming…
Neurodegenerative disease is an all-encompassing term for an array of conditions which principally affect the neurons of the human brain. These make up the nervous system, which also incorporates the spinal cord and, under normal circumstances, do not replace themselves or reproduce. Therefore, when they are damaged or die off, they are unable to be replaced. Neurodegenerative diseases are debilitating conditions that result in progressive degeneration and/or the death of nerve cells. This…
This book “Cryptic Female Choice in Arthropods” provides a comprehensive and up to date look into research from the last few decades on Cryptic Female Choice (CFC) in arthropods. This book is built around research from a variety of experts in the field who together build a book structured around key behavioural, ecological and evolutionary questions in regards to specific taxonomic groups of arthropods, such as, spiders, harvestmen, flies, moths, crickets, earwigs, beetles, eusocial insects…
Sirtuins and Histone deactylases (HDACs) Eukaryotic DNA is packed in a high level structure called chromatin, resulting from the assembly of an elementary unit, the nucleosome, and an octameric structure obtained from eight proteins called histones [1]. Histone deacetylation is a reversible process whereby histone and non-histone protein transfer the acetyl moiety from acetyl co-enzyme A (CoA) to lysines while histone acetylation is the direct opposite process whereby acetyl groups are removed…
Preparing Subcultures. We obtained a stock vial with hot cheeto and a stock vial of wild type Drosophila melanogaster. We began our study of hot cheeto, a bristle mutation, by setting up subcultures of the mutant. We used the hot cheeto stock to create a new subculture to collect virgin females to be used for the genetic crosses. To reduce the chance of infection when creating subcultures, we disinfected the workplace station with a solution of 70% ethanol. Flies were anesthetized using the…
Charbill Klayme 0993551 Dr. Hye-Jeong Yeo Functions of SREBPs Abstract SREBPs are 1,150 Amino Acid long proteins that are used to activate cholesterolgenesis. SREBP-1a are used to induce all the response genes. The SREBP-2 are used to allow expression of the LDL receptor. Ubiquination, usually by the kinase GSK3, can be the weapon to destructing SREBPs. SREBP-1a will build more cholesterol and fatty acids in rats and mice when it is over expressed. The SREBP-1c are best studied in the…
