Playing games for a living isn't worth those million-dollar wages, says Jesse Spector, a sports writer for The Sporting News. People such as firefighters, doctors, and members of the military provide more valuable services but earn just a fraction of what professional athletes make. The average firefighter in the United States makes about $48,000 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. President Barack Obama's annual salary of $400,000 is lower than most athletes' pay. Even New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has conceded that professional athletes are overpaid. The 2010 Super Bowl MVP has a five-year, $100 million contract with the Saints. "Unless you're finding a cure for cancer or creating world peace, I don't know if anybody deserves to get that much money," he said after signing the contract. This is especially true compared to any other job that couldn't pay a fraction of that amount for a salary.
