“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” Words mentioned by the writer Jonathan Swift in his book called Gulliver’s Travels. However, this is going to be focused on his other popular handiwork called A Modest Proposal, in which we can observe how he is able to see the unseen and critiques the wealthy through it. Swift was born in Ireland in 1667, and thanks to his job as private secretary to Sir William Temple, a retired Whig diplomat, at Moor Park in southern England he could gather information through the Temple's vast library in which he educated himself of politics. In the other hand, we have George Orwell who also critique society in his own language and point of view through the essay Shooting an Elephant. Nevertheless, we need to know that Orwell lived in a different period than Swift did. Also, George was born in 1903 in India, but he become an agent for the British government in Burma. We now see that both writers were very involved in politics, and wanted to tell the world about it. Now, even though Orwell was born in India, he as well as Swift could see the unseen of the British government thanks to his job and experience. As it is seen in his essay that he could see the good of an elephant that society could not had seen. In fact, we can infer that both writers wouldn’t be able to write about the political problems if it was not for their designated jobs. If we compare both author’s writing style in these two splendid essays,…

While reading The Scarlet Letter, I was introduced to many characters such as Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and Pearl Prynne. Of all the main characters in the story, the person I most empathize with is Pearl. Even though Pearl is a little girl, I can understand, in a way, what she is going through. Throughout the beginning of the story, she has no idea who her father is. While I have known my father for my whole life i have known of people who have never met…

The most important part of any story is the plot, but what is the most important part of the plot? As shown in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the characters are what drives the plot. Characters can drive the plot in a couple of ways that can be shown with The Scarlet Letter; they can be symbols, they can be used to show aspects of the plot in a more visual and less abstract way, and they will physically move the plot forward. Without the characters there is no plot and so by…

Throughout the Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne explores themes of conformity through Hester Prynne´s various relationships. Scarlet Letter Essay The word “object” has a tremendous amount of different meanings. One of them is, “A thing that has physical existence”. This definition is a nearly perfect description of Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Once Hester is forced to wear the scarlet letter, she is nothing more than just a physical existence. The way that townspeople originally treat Hester after her punishment is declared is truly shocking. Throughout most of the novel,…
