Drapier's Letters

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” Words mentioned by the writer Jonathan Swift in his book called Gulliver’s Travels. However, this is going to be focused on his other popular handiwork called A Modest Proposal, in which we can observe how he is able to see the unseen and critiques the wealthy through it. Swift was born in Ireland in 1667, and thanks to his job as private secretary to Sir William Temple, a retired Whig diplomat, at Moor Park in southern England he could gather information through the Temple's vast library in which he educated himself of politics. In the other hand, we have George Orwell who also critique society in his own language and point of view through the essay Shooting an Elephant. Nevertheless, we need to know that Orwell lived in a different period than Swift did. Also, George was born in 1903 in India, but he become an agent for the British government in Burma. We now see that both writers were very involved in politics, and wanted to tell the world about it. Now, even though Orwell was born in India, he as well as Swift could see the unseen of the British government thanks to his job and experience. As it is seen in his essay that he could see the good of an elephant that society could not had seen.
