Therefore, by not carrying the past forward into the future we are completely free of the past. In this state of observation or meditation we naturally always refer to the Self and intuitive knowing arises as we have been freed from the past and the future. According to Krishnamurti, in the process of observation is the act which comes by way of knowing for in the process of observation we are changing what is being observed so we are acting in the transcendent (1968). Krishnamurti’s view that the observer changes the observed is supported by physics. Physics demonstrates the quantum mechanical phenomena of the observer changing the observed in the double-slit experiments, developed by Thomas Young in 1801. These experiments are described at length in The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow (2010 69-70). The double-slit experiment demonstrates that the observation of a system will alter the final product to be particles or waves – if no observation takes place a wave pattern is revealed; if observation takes place these same objects exhibit behavior of point particles. When fully matured observation of the movement of life increases our level of awareness and perception which allows for the natural transcending of the senses and the intellectual mind to bring us to the direct experience of the Self which is always in the transcendent. In the transcendent we realize that the observer has become the observed, the two are united in One, the Self. According to…

determine which identity is their true self. In literature, the use of a doppelganger or a double allows the reader to see the internal struggle of the character expressed externally – essentially uncovering a hidden nature. Andrew Smith’s statement, referring to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, can also be applied to James Hogg’s The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Both works of later-Romantic Gothic, these novels deal with the social impact of their protagonists’ ‘selfhood’, or ‘inner life’, rather than how the outward sublime influences the ‘inner self’. Instead of seeking ‘transcendence’ in sublime nature, Victor Frankenstein and Robert Wringhim aim to transcend their social and spiritual…
