I am a part-time orchestral conductor and percussionist. As a passionate musician, I always enjoy learning, practicing, performing, and appreciating music fascinating. Throughout my musical experience, I encountered a lot of thought-provoking questions. How did I receive and interpret information during each rehearsal? Why did repetitive practicing make it possible for me to play a repertoire without looking at music score? What made professional orchestra able to have less rehearsal than a…
Joey Peixoto Music Appreciation Listening Assignment Romantic: "Erlkönig" begins with the piano playing fast triplets to make a feeling of direness and reproduce the steed's running. The left hand of the piano part presents a low-enlist leitmotif made out of progressive triplets. The right hand plays triplets all through the piece until the last three bars. The steady triplets drive the incessant tweaks of the piece as it switches between the characters. This theme is specifically connected…

Music has been a part of our lives ever since recorded history has taken place. It evolves with society to help build our culture. Just imagine not having any music or art in the Renaissance era. In the opinion of one of the world’s most significant pianists of all time, Frédéric Chopin always had thought that the piano playing is a form of art, and teaching students how to play piano should not merely about how students can be capable of performing a musical piece with faster tempo and strong dynamic. A good piano teacher should explain to student the art of the music for them to able to comprehend the pieces, and the students should be able to express themselves throughout the learning…

The chant melody is from the setting of the Gradual Viderunt Omnes from the Mass for Christmas Day. The original piece features a soloist that performs the psalm verse which alternates with a choir that sings the respond. This verse is extremely ornate, and the respond is also very melismatic. It is the only part of the Mass for Christmas Day that is in mode 5. Because of its highly melismatic nature, it was viewed as an appropriate candidate for future composers to base new works off of with…
Of particular significance is Holst’s fifth movement, entitled Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age. Alan Leo’s book on astrology described those born under Saturn as having the potential for long life but inclined to plod through life slowly and steadily, often being unresponsive. Interestingly, Holst’s own personality is quite similar to Leo’s description of a person born under Saturn. Saturn was Holst’s favorite movement of the planets; perhaps Holst recognized its similarity to his own…
