The beads were to represent the honors given to a worthy man in 1800s and 1900s. The bags were closely identified with the aboriginals of North America in the Great Lakes are and notably the Anishinaabe or Anishinaabeg, in plural which is an autonym, is used by the Odawa, Ojibwa and the Algonquin First Nations in Ontario, Canada and extended down to the natives in Kansas too. These communities speak similar Anishinaabe languages that are part of the Algonquian language family. They all articulate closely related Anishinaabemowin-Anishinaabe linguistics, of the Algonquian language family. The communities are all American- Indian. The bag has its native language nam, aazhooningwa’igan (ag), which literally means "worn across the shoulder". This contributes to the confusion that comes between the medicine bag and the bandolier bag. The difference between the medicine bag and the Bandolier bag is the fact that the wearing styles for both these accessories is different. The medicine bag is worn on shoulder only however the Bandolier bag can be worn on the shoulder or on the front as an apron is similarly worn.
