He was about five years old and was enjoying the corn that held in both hands, taking turns biting each ear. We didn’t say a word or even look at each other. Rather, we rushed on the boy at the same time, and before he knew what was happening we had taken the corn from him” (Beah 30). In this part of the story Ishmael is remembering an incident where he and his friends had stolen from a young boy. Now the author made it quite clear that Ishmael had stolen before but, Ishmael has a brother just a few years older and I would’ve thought he would have seen him in the young boy and not steal from him. It makes me wary of how this is going to play out, and question what he is willing to do if the situation becomes worse, as desperate times call for desperate measures. “Was there an end to this madness and was there any future for me beyond these bushes? Many doleful comments followed, but Elise couldn’t bear it anymore. Shoving her way to the spot closest to the splintering plank of wood, Elise took a shaky breath.
