Alan Civil was said to be “larger than life” both in music and in personality. He was known for his spectacular playing of many songs. He wasn’t afraid to express his opinions of directors. Alan was born in 1929 in Northampton, England into a family of brass players. He started playing horn at age nine. He left school during wartime and joined the Royal Artillery Band. During this time, showing the kind of initiative that characterized his career, he convinced Aubrey Brain to further his skills, which required a 120-mile round-trip journey. Later he traveled to Hamburg, Germany to learn from Willy von Stemm. After his military service, Alan joined Dennis Brain in the Royal Philharmonic as second horn. In 1955, he joined the Philharmonia on tour and then stayed as co-principal. When the acting principal died in 1957, Alan took over. He was the first non-German to be approached by the Berlin Philharmonic, but he decided to stay with the Philharmonia. In 1966, he left to join the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he stayed until retirement. He retired in 1988. He was also a professor during this time, at the Royal College of Music.
