Questioning the passing of the strange sea” (830-832). Some would say this was his only choice. That being willing to sacrifice crew members would take courage; however, that is not my view. Odysseus is not the best example when it comes to courage, but today we have Dean Kamen. A living embodiment of courage, he is an inventor, entrepreneur, and advocate for science and technology (Dean 1) With over 440 U.S. and foreign patents (Dean 1), he is one of today’s greatest minds. He founded three companies to market his inventions and ideals: AutoSyringe, DEKA, and FIRST (Dean 1). Both AutoSyringe and DEKA are working to revolutionize medical advancements while FIRST is Kamen’s way to get the next generation involved in science and technology (Dean 1). Being involved in FIRST has given me an idea of this mans impact on modern society. Kamen said that FIRST came into being because this country’s children do not receive the education that they need (Bill 1). In his blog on The Huffington Post after his interview with Kamen, Bill Robinson said, “How intriguing, I thought to myself that this man sees it as his “job” to fix the education system … by himself if necessary” (Bill 1).
