The piece of art that I would like to focus on is displayed in chapter five (pg.193) of our textbook. It is a piece titled “Horrid Massacre in Virginia,” referring to the events that occurred in Nat Turner Rebellion. Although the specific artist of the work is unknown, this illustration was presented in a book by Samuel Warner, titled, “Authentic and Impartial Narrative of the Tragical Scene Which Was Witnessed in Southampton County.” This book was written in 1831, which is the same year of Nat…
For my visit to the St. Louis Art Museum, I chose to view one of my favorite paintings that I have been admiring for years. Currently on view in Gallery 215, hangs the oil on canvas by Marc Chagall titled Temptation (The piece is also known as Adam and Eve). This painting is significant to the Surrealist movement, Jewish Artists, and to the popularity of Marc Chagall. Once you understand some of the details of the history of this work and its creator, that might not sound like such a grand…
A world without photography seems merely impossible for the modern age humans. Photography is seen throughout our everyday lives, from the television, to smartphones, and on our computers it seems impossible to avoid it. But why would we want to? Photography is a vision, a memory, a moment captured in time that makes it possible for humans to share these moments with others. But more times than not, these moments, visions, photographs are altered, manipulated, and distorted to influence, and…
came from his heritage. He first attracted attention for his graffiti under the name “SAMO” in New York city. His fame for his painting was soon adored by the public and people paid as much as fifty thousand dollars for a Basquiat original. This new art movement brought in a new wave of young and experimental artist which included Julian Schnabel and Susan Rustenburg. His paintings continued to exhibit around…
Should music and art classes be replaced with core classes in high school? This is a question being asked by many educators, political leaders and parents. Art and music classes are a valued and important outlet for creativity and individualism. The debate of whether or not to replace art and music classes with core classes often pits them against each other as if there were no other choices. The controversy is actually more about if we should exclude art and music completely or find a way to…
The first artwork that I chose was Bertel Thorvaldsen’s, Ganymede and the Eagle made between the years of 1817-1829. He finally finished the sculpture in 1829 out of marble. As I said I really admire Greek and Roman art, so this was an easy pick. The dimensions of this sculpture I would say are around height wise of 35 inches and width wise about 20. I could not find the exact measurements so that is a rough estimate. DESCRIBE: The thing I first noticed about the piece was texture and detail…
German Expression: Nosferatu Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror directed by F.W. Murnau in 1922 is one the first and few German Expressionist films created. It was coined as a horror film and a unauthorized version of Bram Stokers novel Dracula written in 1897. Nosferatu is about a vampire, Count Orlock, it was also one he first horror films ever produced. German expression was shown in great detailed in this film. There were. A few points that stood out to the most. Some were symbolic of…
Throughout the ages, art has influenced people and ideas in many civilizations. Art has been a way that people have expressed their beliefs and ways of life for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used many forms of art including statues, pottery and tomb paintings to express their view of their way of life, their view on religion and the Afterlife. Ancient Greek art illustrated a variety of different aspects of Greek life. Some of these examples of art were influenced by government, daily…

titled, “American Gothic”, by Grant Wood, painted in 1930. Grant Wood painted on a 74.3 X 62.2 cm piece of oil on beaverboard. These materials give the painting an old timing look but with good color and contrast. This painting can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago. Now I’m going to describe this painting in more detail, so that you can see a visual picture in your head. The white male in the artwork has very thin brown hair; with thick bushy eyebrows; brown eyes, circle glasses, big…
