The accusation of these two men seemed rather racist on the court's behalf due to the lack of evidence. People believed the men received unfair bias from the court due to where Sacco and Vanzetti came from. Society believed that the court showed prejudice against them during the trial. The Red Scare took place in America in the early twentieth century and reached its peak in the twenties, racism and nativism played a large factor in American society. The Sacco Vanzetti defense committee published a letter to the public stating, “‘The evidence against these two men has been ruled upon by only one man -- Judge Webster Thayer of Massachusetts. Scores of keen legal minds familiar with the record say that the evidence is wholly insufficient. They ask justice for Sacco and Vanzetti.’”1 The Sacco and Vanzetti trial concluded in 1927. The men received the death penalty. Nativism, simply defined as the policy to protect the ideas and interests of native born inhabitants against immigrants. A nativist, usually a white Anglo-Saxon protestant, specifically disliked Jewish and Catholic immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe. During the early 20th century, immigration levels peaked.
