    What is the death valley, and how did it get its name? the death valley is a desert that is located in eastern california. it is the lowest, hotest, driest place in North america. Death Vallelys is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. Death Valley has hot desert climate, with long, extremely hot summers and short, warm or mild winters as well as little rainfall. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley. The salt pan on the floor of Death Valley covers more than 200 square miles. It is 40 miles long and more than 5 miles wide. The death valley is 3.4 million acres.Death Valley was given its forbidding name by a group of pioneers lost here in the winter of 1849-1850.
