Catholics have very strict requirement when it comes to their beliefs with the dead, more stricken then what us at Shipman Funeral Home are used to. Second, Catholics believe in having a vigil service before the funeral mass. This vigil service is what we are used to as a visitation service. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany explains that family and friends come to the vigil service and pray over the deceased’s and the priest, deacon, or lay minister will deliver a few scripture readings. The diocese also goes on to explain that only hymns are allowed to be played during a vigil, they do not accept any other music. During a vigil service members of the family and also friends are allowed to say words of remembrance about the deceased. Explained in the text “A baptized Christian usually proclaims the first and second reading. A cantor usually proclaims the psalm and an ordained minister (priest or deacon) proclaims the gospel (“Preparing for a Roman Catholic Funeral”). Along with the vigil traditions from Catholics it does not differ a lot from a traditional Christian visitation. This means that there would not be too much required from the funeral staff that is anything out of the normal. Finally, Catholics have a service which they call a mass.
