Reed Erdman Ms. Dowling Advanced English 9, Hour 4 October 23, 2014 “The Monster” Lyrics Analysis The song that I have chosen for a lyrics analysis is “The Monster” by Eminem featuring Rihanna. “The Monster” was released on October 29, 2013 as part of the “Marshall Mathers LP 2” album. The songs theme is about Eminem trying to escape his troubled past but it will always still with him and he can never escape from it. The song is about the monster that is inside of Eminem's head and he will never be able to get away from. The deeper meaning behind it is Eminem who had a troubled life being from the poorest area of Detroit where he would participate at rap battles at the club near his trailer home, wants to escape his drug addicted past self who didn't give enough time for his family. Eminem uses metaphors to describe his past and present self. “Fame made me a balloon cause my ego inflated and I blew.” Is him referencing when he first became famous and moved away from Detroit to L.A. Where he then made records with Dr. Dre who he references in the song and also references how he didn't want to be seen in public. “The thing I love's killing me.” Its comparing his struggles and how his rapping is affecting them but he loves rapping because it was something to ease all his stress while he struggled with life and doesn't want to give it up even though his family suffered while he was always gone at work. Eminem uses rhymes throughout the song and some have deeper meaning then…

segregation, De Jure and De Facto segregation. De Jure segregation was segregation that is forced by law and can be easily fixed, De Facto segregation was segregation enforced by the public and society, not necessarily by law. Since De Jure segregation is a law, it is required and hard to get around for example, Plessy v. Ferguson, and the Jim Crow Laws.
