Military science fiction has grown up over the years. Gone are the days when a simple plot would suffice. Readers demanded more of an intricate story, something they can proverbially sink their teeth into. They do not want something that could be read in hours. Because of this demand, story plots are more complex today than in earlier years. In the stories presented this semester, storylines varied, but there was always once central theme: survival. Characters were built up more to accommodate the intricate plots. Themes have matured and have reflected the state of current world events. All these work together to supply the backbone of the stories. Over the past decade, story scenarios have become more enthralling to the reader. The adventures presented this semester provided perfect examples. A simple plot of survival-of-the-fittest was clear in Arena. All Carson wanted to do was get out of the predicament he was in, and had to battle an unknown creature to do so. Second Variety also told of survival, but it was during the aftermath of war. However, the story tone changed when Hendricks had discovered he had to fight evolving creatures that resembled humans. A matter of whom to trust was added to the survival theme. Trying to stay alive amidst creatures dominating worlds was next. Johnny Rico had to combat world destroying Arachnids in Starship Troopers.
