Texans are proud of their fundraising efforts for charitable causes, and North Texans have plenty of opportunities to donate their time and money in October. From the ALS charity walks to the Susan G. Komen fundraising events to the Stepping Out of Homelessness Luncheon in Dallas, you can give to one or several charities or foundations that benefit those in need. The ALS Association Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a condition that affects the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. The progression of this neurodegenerative disease leads to scarring of the tissue in the affected area. This scarring then progresses to a lack of control over the muscles, and eventually, the muscles atrophy and deteriorate as a result. ALS is a disease that debilitates approximately 30,000 individuals at any given time in America. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gained national recognition. In Texas, this event takes place in August. This challenge involves volunteers who are willing to pour ice water over their heads in order to raise money and awareness for ALS.
