As previously described, out of the 14 variables tested, 4 were found to have a significant effect on the amount of Eastern Curlews present within each Quadrat. The first variable, the penetrometer resistance was found to have a negative effect on the amount present. This means that the Eastern Curlews had a preference for softer substrate. This can be attributed to how they source their food, which is present in the substrate. The more resistance the substrate has, the harder and more energy required to reach the food needed. This tied back to migratory bird’s considerations and how their habitat is influenced by their migration as they aim to reduce the amount of energy expended, especially on retrieving food. This was also proven in previous literature, such as the 2007 paper written by Andrew Geering which shows that the Eastern Curlew has a preference for less resistance in the substrate. The hydrometer reading found there to be very similar substrate texture throughout all 22 quadrats with 17 recording a reading of 0 which is a composition of 100% sand and 5 recording a composition of 99.95% sand. The wind speed was found to have a positive significant effect with more curlews present during more wind. This goes against previous literature by…

The Eurasian curlew and the Peregrine falcon are two different bird’s species with noticeable anatomical and behavioral differences between them. While the curlew feeds from invertebrates, at the same time it becomes the prey for the falcon, which is conditioned by another feature of their anatomy, their beaks. A decurved bill such as the one present in Numenius arquata has numerous advantages over a straight bill for such foraging on mudflats. Foraging Curlews use probing as a way to take…

Many organisms found throughout this ecosystem must adapt to survive symbiotically in relation to these factors. An example of an animal adapted to the variable abiotic factors is the eastern curlew (Numenius madagascariensis). The eastern curlew is a migratory bird whose downward-curved bill allows it access to the muddy depths of Australian mangrove mudflats to probe for crustaceans. Its long legs also enable the exploration of boggy, muddy areas unattainable to other short-legged birds [10].…

Personification is used heavily in the poem. For example, in stanza 1, line 2, “The twilight darkens, the curlew calls;” is giving a nonhuman object human action. In stanza 2, lines 7 and 8, “But the sea, the sea in darkness calls;/The little waves, with their soft, white hands,” are both uses of personification once again. Line 8 uses the sense of touch with the description of hands. Lastly, in stanza 3 line 12, “Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls;” is another use of personification. In…
