Although it is wrong, he had courage to break into Forrester’s apartment. Therefore, Jamal’s friends put him in a difficult position and Jamal is daring to accept the offer and break in. According to Movielocity (2001), “Both men defy assumptions they initially made about one another, assumptions about race and age, history and ability.” (p. 2). This quote is saying that individuals are put into difficult circumstances when faced with diversity, like Jamal and Forrester did. Although Jamal and Forrester were certainly different, they bravely overcame this barrier. Another example is when Professor Crawford accuses Jamal of plagiarism. Forrester came to the rescue and read Jamal’s paper in front of the class. This is courageous of Forrester because he has a phobia of the outside world and people. Hence, Forrester realizes Jamal is in a difficult position, and uses determination to overcome his fear and help Jamal. This is also seen when Jamal is navigating a new world in the South Bronx, and Forrester turns into an unlikely guide for Jamal’s academic journey (Movielocity, 2001, p. 2). This example shows that Jamal is in a difficult time with his life in the Bronx, but uses courage to overcome it when he met Forrester.
