In Elizabeth Browning’s pleading letter to Napoleon III, Elizabeth uses many rhetorical devices in order to convince the Emperor of France to pardon Hugo. She flatters His Majesty Napoleon III in an attempt to win his goodwill. Second, she uses syntax in order to create an intelligent letter. Finally, she thoroughly explains her purposes to Napoleon. Thus using flattery, syntax, and logos, Browning was able to effectively persuade Napoleon III to pardon Hugo,had of course he sent the letter. Browning uses flattery to get off to a good start with Napoleon III. Is this common for the circumstances of her time? The answer can be best described by: yes. She was writing this letter in Britain to an emperor who ruled over France and her colonial possessions. He has just jailed a writer for being critical of his regime. Thus, in order to achieve a good setting with the emperor, she flatters him. She states at the beginning of the letter in lines 2-3 that she only has the influence of “That of the weakest(Herself) on the strongest(referring to Napoleon)”. She also constantly repeats the traditional custom of “your majesty” to achieve her goal of seeming humble to Napoleon III. In addition, she flatters his own nation of France. In lines 26-27 she flatters his role as guardian of French glories “the Emperor who is the guardian of her other glories should remember him and not leave him out”. Finally, she commits an almost heretical comparison between Napoleon and God himself.…
