This means that an academic style of writing is used in the corpus’ articles. Academic writing employs a descriptive style that is aimed at explaining the cause of an effect and convincing readers of a report to accept or agree with the findings. In addition, scientific or academic writing dictates that one adopts a formal style of writing. To some extent, this style dictates the type of conjunctions to be used in writing the report. In that case, academic writers tend to have a bias for conjunctions that show addition, clarification, exemplification and contrast. Finally, considering that the corpus consisted of written text, conjunctions that would be normally used in spoken corpuses, for example, as I was saying, to get back to the point etcetera, were avoided. The classification model for the conjunctions was adopted from (Halliday & Mettlessen, 2014). Extension These types of conjunctions are used to add new but related information to an existing clause.
