The United States Navy has been involved in countless engagements since their creation in October of 1775. Throughout the Navy’s history, the importance of having advanced technology and superior leadership was their key to becoming a world power and staying that way. However, some battles see a greater emergence of new technology and leadership than others do. The Battle of Hampton Roads during the Civil War is one of the paramount battles that lead to the growth of the United States Navy, due to the fact this encounter between the Union and Confederate ironclad ships was unlike any other naval engagement that preceded it. On March 9, 1862 after a two-day intense struggle, the Union ironclad, USS Monitor, left Hampton Roads as the victor due to the impressive leadership of Lieutenant John Worden, innovative naval technology, and frankly pure luck. theater of operations (MTO). Second, Eisenhower’s component commanders for HUSKY were likewise still engaged in TORCH and geographically dispersed around the MTO, making communication and coordination difficult in the important early planning stages. The distracted and disjointed arrangement of AFHQ and its components just months prior to HUSKY’s D-day limited Eisenhower’s ability to adequately develop and issue his intent. This contributed to his subordinate commander’s inability to develop a…

The Qing Emperor didn’t like how much power she had, so he sent the Imperial Navy to defeat her. She won countless battles with many countries and destroyed the emperor 's navies. other time that non-security personnel have their weapons is when they are training in the field or on a live fire range. Other than that, they are locked up in a unit armory. The military police or security forces cannot be at everyplace all the time. One of the type of attacks that should never be allowed to happen on a U.S. military installation in the…

The compromise to move forward with Operation Husky created a situation where commanders had an imperfect understanding of the purpose of the invasion. Ambiguity hampers efficiency and confidence and probably had impacts on leader decisions particularly in phase two when allied forces failed to move quickly in reacting to the Axis withdrawal of troops and equipment. Additionally, most military experts would agree that it would be difficult at best, considering the available technology in the…

Ever since I was a child, electricity was magic; I would spend countless hours trying to discover how it worked. Electromagnetism is now the focus of this childlike obsession, as it is as equally fascinating to me as the outlets were to the person of my youth. The Office of Naval Research has a department dedicated to electromagnetics research called Code 35, Naval Air Warfare and Weapons. The specific area within the department I would like to pursue is the electromagnetic railgun development.…
