I attended the Golden State Women’s Choir Competition at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church on March 4th, 2017. There, I watched the Advanced Treble Choir from Marin High School perform, directed by Stevie Greenwell. I enjoyed the concert very much. The songs selected were all very different. “Selene’s Boat” was very soft and the choir stayed very still throughout the song. “Ave Maris Stella” was a required piece, but the choir did it well. They performed it at a slow tempo, and sang the…

On the evening of February 21, 2018, I attended a Jamey Aebersold live jazz concert featuring Howard Levy and Chris Siebol at the music building at UIC. Since, I had never been to a jazz concert prior to this one, I did not know what to expect, but since it was my first time, I was excited. In my opinion, the evening’s program was nicely presented. The musicians started by introducing themselves, Howard Levy, an American multi-instrumentalist who switched off with playing the harmonica and the…

I thoroughly enjoyed observing Dr. Silveira conduct and lead the IC Concert Band in rehearsal today. Dr. Silveira led a very efficient rehearsal that resulted in a lot of playing by the ensemble, and significant improvement. At the beginning of the rehearsal, I noticed that flutes, clarinets and saxophones were there. I discovered later that this was because they were given sectional time while Dr. Silveira worked with the rest of the ensemble for a portion of the rehearsal. This allowed him to…

Concerts have always been a way for the general public to experience their favorite artists and musicians perform right in front of them. I myself have been to several concerts, all of which have been rap and hip hop concerts. So going to an orchestral concert was going to be a very different experience to me. I know that there wasn’t going to be any mosh pits or excessive screaming of fans throwing themselves onto the performers. With all that in mind, I was mentally preparing myself for a very…

This was my first rock and roll concert that I have ever attended. It was an amazing experience to witness live the energy of this genre of music. During the concert, the spontaneity in the artists’ improvisations, musical communications of the artists by their listening to each other’s instruments, the guitarist’s hair shaking and lively performance, the guitarist’s and the bassist’s jumps in the middle of the songs reflecting their musical expression, and the bassist’s impromptu singing in a…

I attended a classical music concert on Saturday. The concert is part of a fifteen-day USA tour of the chamber orchestra that originated in London, the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields with Joshua Bells. Joshua Bells is a very well-known violinist and music director of the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields. Joshua Bells is the first person to hold the title of music director of this chamber orchestra since the orchestra was formed in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner. People were dressed very…

found during a concert; a Melanie Martinez concert. Melanie’s style and general theme of her concerts can more than often be described as possessing a whimsical, carnival, feel due to her usage of circus props, such as a carousel, and distinct carnival pop tunes. This, along with her innocent yet powerful voice, has piqued the interest of many alternative music listeners. I am no exception. As of fall 2016, I had the pleasure to witness her eccentric performance unfold in live concert. The…

This Stony Brook University performance was the first time I was exposed to any performance, so throughout the concert, there were many things that stuck out to me. The first thing that stuck out to me was the dress code. Upon arrival, I was surprised by dozens in very formal outfits. Once I was in the auditorium I did notice that there were indeed no phones, people talking or people eating. I saw the pride and excitement in some of the families faces as the performance began. It was very quiet…
