I live in a world filled with people. They are neurons, not humans. They are the very mechanism by which you think. As one of them, I know what goes on inside your head. We all work together in a network. This is partly the story of how depression changed the interconnected world I live in. My world has a name: Mary. To you, it may be another person, but she is where I live. I am in something you call a brain. To understand how this world works, you need to know what happened when we first…

I knew everything on the test and I studied the night before, but when I got it, it seemed like my mind went blank. When I got the test back I ended up getting a 51% on it and the test was worth 100 points. This ended up dropping my grade from a 98% overall to an 81% overall. I've realized that I have no chance of getting an “A” at this point and it's really making me upset, and kind of sad. I’m…

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Experience A grilled cheese sandwich is easy enough to make, right? Three ingredients: cheese, bread, and butter. I had watched my mother and father make it for me all my life. On this fateful day, when I had made my first grilled cheese sandwich by myself, I was seven. I was at my mother's house and she was asleep. I remember the bright sun rays greeted me. They tickled my eyes as if to say it's time to start our day. Subsequently, my stomach roared like a roll of…
The psychological condition of understanding is not binary. Life is understood by all through different lenses, and that lens is known as perspective. One’s frame of reference creates their outlook, and that outlook generates an individual’s reality. Emotions, intellect, and feelings represent the spectrum of an individual’s kaleidoscopic reality, though all are displayed at one point in time, and at another point in time their arrangement may be entirely different, the colors remain the same.…

This is commonly characterised through a “sense of attachment or ownership” to oneself physically or mentally (Olsen, 2015). Bodily continuity is an idea which emerges from this, that one person has the same physical body for their lifespan. Various critiques of bodily continuity have been formed to oppose such abstract…

In this paper, I will argue that the paradoxes Oliver Sacks mentions in his essay "The Mind's Eye" have only one purpose, that is, to show us the complex working of the brain and its ability to overcome disability. The paradoxes are made an integral part of the essay because each paradox mentioned shows us how the human brain can adapt, find creative and ingenious ways to cope with physical losses and disorders, and that how powerful the power of language actually is. In his essay, Sacks…
