Shirley Cards were used by photo labs to calibrate skin tone, shadows and light during the printing process of a picture (npr.com). Shirley cards date back to the mid- 1950s, when Kodak was the primary company for color film (npr.com). What would happen is a customer would bring in their film to a shop or lab and they would then print the pictures for them In order to maintain clean and precise photos, a Shirley Card would be used to eliminate anything out of the ordinary. So where did the name come from “Shirley” come from? It came from the original model used by Kodak (npr.com). The model was used as a “guide” for what was needed for pictures. When Shirley Cards were first used, only Caucasian females were used (npr.com). Shirley Cards have seen their fair share of changes throughout the years. According to Ray DeMoulin who worked for Kodak says even with different models of the card, “it was always called Shirley.” Ever since the 50s, Shirley cards have adapted to include every type of model. In the early 1970s, African Americans started to appear in the cards (npr.com). “I started incorporating black models pretty heavily in our testing, and it caught on very quickly,” said Jim Lyon, a former tech researcher for Kodak. He adds that he they did this in order to create a better film and to incorporate everyone’s skin tone in an appropriate way (npr.com). Once this happened, Kodak began to add all sorts of ethnicities in their Shirley Cards. In 1995, Kodak invented a…

The sequence that I will be analyzing is the opening of the movie 8 ½ (1963) directed by the great Federico Fellini. The 8½ opening sequence uses specific panning shots and the element of sound to depict fear and pressure in the most thought provoking ways possible. Filled with Fellini’s infinite imagination, this movie does not cease to amaze the viewer even after 40 years of its creation. It is certainly a masterpiece of its time and attracts you from the very first sequences in the film. As…

War is something that has followed humanity since the beginning. From the very beginning of time humans have been fighting each other, stealing each other’s resources, and trying to assert dominance over others. This quote is demonstrating how Catch-22 has defeated its own purpose. The government wants to cut out any questionable text from the letters. If an officer signs his name, then the officer is allowing the censorship to be traced back to him, which essentially sets up the censored text to be revealed. This quote is highlighting one of the novel’s themes, hypocrisy. This theme is important to the story because on numerous occasions Catch-22 will make a statement, flips that statement, and always…
