indicates that the reality of perfect femininity is completing domestic and sexual tasks with equal fervor. In addition to an interesting use of form, Jamaica Kincaid’s use of identity, or rather the lack of identity, is a crucial part in developing the work. The girl in the story is never named; neither is her mother. The setting of the work is Antigua, where the author is from. However, there are only brief details in the story that allude to this such as the accusation of the girl singing benna in Sunday school and the instructions on how to make pepper pot (Kincaid 1726). The special plantain pudding could translate into apple pie. Through not thoroughly developing the characters, Kincaid develops a universal character. The girl who is faced with the reality of being a female is an embodiment of all women. It is through this vague identity that the truth of the reality is strongest. One interesting aspect of the girl’s identity is her age. While a numeric age is not directly mentioned, there is mention of cloths used during her menstrual cycle (Kincaid 1725). This indicates that the daughter is…

Taryn had recommended and ordered me the New York Steak and the homemade clam chowder. Upon arrival of my steak the blissful sound of sizzling meat made its way to my ear. The steak came with rice pilaf, and cole slaw that made the plate look like an art piece created by Picasso. The steak made a crisp sound when struck with my knife and it cut like jello. The steak had a buttery taste and when eaten with the rice pilaf, it added a sour cream and onion flavor. The cole slaw had a cold touch to…
