The foundations of Canadian cinema lie in both documentary realism and avant-garde experimentalism. I believe that neither tradition is more “Canadian” than the other, because to ignore one or the other would be ultimately ignoring part of our cinema’s history, they can both contain Canadian elements that traditionally “make a film Canadian”, and they can even be seen in “newer” films, making both traditions equally “Canadian”. While the tradition of documentary realism in Canadian cinema is generally more focused on than the avant-garde experimentalism, to completely ignore the avant-garde would be to ignore a large part of our cinematic history. Jim Leach writes, “this view of Canadian cinema tends to deflect attention from the many currents that have little to do with the realist tradition. It downplays the extensive output of genre films, but what also tends to disappear from view is the rich vein of Canadian films more attuned to the processes of imagination than to external reality,” (65). Even Bruce Elder in “The Cinema We Need” (1985) argues that avant-garde is the cinema that Canada actually needs, rather than documentary realism.
