Treatments & Prevention Treatment during the acute phase of Chagas Disease is critical because it rapidly reduces parasitemia, decreases the chance of death and reduces the likelihood of chronic Chagas Disease (Kaplan and Porter 3). Only two drugs have been proven to improve the patient during the course of this disease and those drugs are nifurtimox and benznidazole. However, treatment from either of these drugs is difficult due to them not being FDA approved. Nifurtimox and benznidazole can only be administered through the CDC. In addition, up to 30% of patient stop the treatment of these drugs due to adverse side effects. Side effects for nifurtimox can include anorexia, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain and occur in up…
Ecological Effects of Chagas Disease and The Triatominae reduviidae By Billy John Muro For Mr. Jose Maldonado Biol 1307 December 6, 2016 Abstract America Trypanosomiasis most commonly known as Chagas disease (ChD) is caused by a protozoan parasite known as Trypanosoma cruzi. This disease affects 7 to 8 million people worldwide. Current treatments such as benznidazole and nifurtimox are partially effective and cause severe side effects, for this reason there is an urgent need to…
Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis is a disease caused by a group of parasite called, Trypanosome cruzi and is most often spread by Triatomine bugs. It was discovered by Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas, in 1909. There are 6-7 million people infected with this disease, and 10,000 deaths a year. It is frequently found in people, dogs, cats, and wild animals in Central and South America, especially in farm lands where poverty prevails. Deforestation for agriculture, mining,…
Harpreet Kaur (100297319) INTRODUCTION Chagas disease is a zoonosis disease and is caused by a transmission of parasite T. cruzi through insect vectors triatomine bugs to humans. The fecal matter of triatomine bugs which are infected with parasite T. cruzi is the main mode of transmission of parasite to humans. The main species of vectors which are responsible for 80% cases of Chagas disease in endemic areas are Triatoma infestans, T. brasiliensis, T. dimidiate, T. soadida, and Rhodinus…
Chagas is a disease transmitted by blood sucking insects called Triatomine bugs which carry the parasite Trypanosoma Cruzi. They become infected with Chagas by biting an infected animal or human, then they carry the disease on to another person. The bugs live in the homes that are built of mud, adobe, straw and palm thatch. They hide in the walls and roofs of the home, coming out at night to feed on the inhabitants. After biting and ingesting a person’s blood the bug defecates on the host,…
malaria (WHA64.17), Chagas disease (WHA63.20), or schistosomiasis (WHA65.21) studied in modules 2,3, and 4. How is that particular agenda addressing socio-cultural issues related to the disease at hand? Provide two arguments two justify your answer. One is the patient perception of Chagas disease. Initially, patients had great fear of the disease and chose not to seek treatment in relation to feeling burdensome. Another is health practice. Latin America being an underdeveloped country,…

Human Geography in the Pharmaceutical Field Human geography relates to pre-pharmacy in the aspect of immunizations and culture. The role of a pharmacist can change based on the stage of development of the country they are in. In the second year of pharmacy school, students learn how to give immunizations, and will use these skills when they get out in the real world. It is important to know how immunizations got distributed to certain parts of the world and how the diseases that they are used…
Health and Culture Assignment 1. What is Chagas disease? How is it transmitted? Where is it found? What are the symptoms of Chagas disease? Chagas disease is a disease caused by a Trypanosome cruzi parasite. This particular parasite feeds on the blood and lymph on the animal it infects from the triatomine bug (vinchucas) bite. The triatomine bug usually hides in the walls and appear at night feeding on the flesh of the natives while they sleep. The disease is primarily found in the Argentina…
Abstract: Neglected tropical diseases are a medically diverse group of tropical infections which are especially common in low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They are caused by a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths. Different organizations define the set of diseases differently. In sub-Saharan Africa, the impact of these diseases as a group is comparable to malaria and tuberculosis. Some of these diseases have known…
