Carnitas

Cuban food has a huge Spanish influence, for example the dish that I got, masitas de puerco, is very similar to a mexican dish called carnitas. Carnitas at Spanish restaurants is cubed pork served with rice and beans. Even though the dishes are very similar, the taste was very different. Masitas de puerco is different from carnitas in the fact that it is sweeter and fresher than carnitas. The carnitas I get are usually topped with a salsa, while the masitas de puerco had onions covering it. My waiter Gilberto said that the Mexican food has “more spice”, such as peppers and salsas, than its Cuban counterpart. I could really tell this after eating my meal. Opposed to Mexican restaurants that I have been to the Cuban food was sweeter than the Mexican food and had very little spice to it.
