Every step of our sixty-mile Canadian canoeing adventure was another challenge. As Chris Hadfield said, it was just a matter of working the problem. That’s NASA-speak for descending a decision tree, methodically looking for a solution. The most rewarding part was being the man in charge; from meal preparation to dangerous situations, the final say was mine. Of all that we went through, I think our fourth portage (a “trail” between two lakes that are not connected by a traversable waterway) exemplifies my crew’s determination the most. Stephan and I took the lead; I was carrying the canoe and he had the two packs. After walking a while, we came to a section of trail that had been overtaken by a creek. There was a drop-off five yards away that…

Three Learning Moments First learning moments this week was during our very first day of class where we took a field trip down to the river in canoes. We paddled down the river about 2 miles, so we could experience what lies beneath and around the riverbed, immersing ourselves in the environment and strangers at the same time. I Kayak, but I never really take the time to stop and enjoy what the water, and what its surroundings have to offer, I use it as an exercise, not a tool for a forum, but I…

sunlight pouring its hot rays down upon the Canadian forest. I’m sweating, beads of liquid streaking down my dirty face. Every other second I hear the buzz of incoming mosquitos like tiny fighter jets preparing for an airstrike, thrumming. The trail beneath my damp sneakers is compact despite the previous days’ rains. My watch beeps, and I fish it out of my breast pocket to reset the time. The timer is set for 45 minutes. That’s how long I’ve been on this trail, portaging. For those of…

I am always up for trying something new, so when I was given the opportunity this past June to try out kayaking for the first time I was not going to pass it up. Going into the experience I was pretty certain that I would have no trouble getting the hang of it because of my past experience with SUP and canoeing...Boy was this the kick in the butt experience I needed. Here are 15 thoughts from my first time kayaking: [On the drive there] Okay this is not going to be so bad I have canoed before…

“This will be super fun.” That is what my dad said right before we went on the canoeing trip he had planned for my cousins and me. He couldn’t have been further from the truth. It all started in the morning on that fateful Monday morning. My father and mother were in the kitchen with my grandma and grandpa talking about the newspaper lying on the table in front of them. I walked in and started to eat breakfast. As I was eating my cereal, my dad said he had a surprise for everyone. He wasn’t…

It was a warm sunny day in the middle of July. This was a special day for me, because it was the day I got to go canoeing. Not only that, but I went with all my cousins, and everything is a lot more fun when I do things with them. Many people are quick to assume that activities such as canoeing are for outdoorsy people who have nothing to do. I thought the same thing, but my perspective started to change as the day went on. Little did I know that this seemingly innocent day would turn into one…
