In the middle of lake superior, there is an idyllic island, 45 miles long and 9 miles wide. It has untouched lakes, thousands of moose, and a dwindling population of wolves. I have been there 2 times, and both times it was an experience I will never forget. This is Isle Royale, the least visited national park in the contiguous US, and the largest island in lake superior. I have hiked over 100 miles on the island, but there are 12 that stand out as the most physically challenging day of my life.…
IRISH TERRIER ORIGIN AND HISTORY The Irish terrier is one of the older terrier breeds. Its solid red coat and long, sleek body distinguish it from other terriers. Earlier Irish terriers were black and tan, grey and brindle with the solid reds appearing at the end of the 19th century. In 1879 Champions Erin and Kilney Boy appeared at a show in Glasgow and are considered the mother and father of the breed. During that era the Irish terrier was one of the most popular breeds both in England and…
proud to spiteful, the wolf and the fox have both been characterized as villains amongst the animal kingdom for many years, but behind the shared claws and fangs, the two creatures are completely different in their methods of deceit. Both being of the Canis genus, the wolf and the fox are cousins. However, they are very different in their movements and behaviors. While both are seen as treacherous creatures, the fox is agile and cunning while the wolf is ferocious and powerful, giving them…
The first idea of a dog was way back in time. About 35,000 thousand years ago arctic wolves were getting "closer" to prehistoric humans. Back in history, dogs were workers or even slaves, but now most dogs are usually our average lovable pets. Dogs have been our buddies, companions, and family for years. There is a reason that wolves became dogs and, how we know dogs today as pets. Dogs have been our companions for years. The idea of a dog started out as a wolf 35,000 years ago. During…
On May 1st., 2016 in California Yosemite National Park packs of 8 to 10 wolves are killing deer and their population is decreasing drastically. Park authorities are worried about this situation and are trying to find solutions to this problem. Wolves are known to be the most aggressive because they hunt in groups that number from 7 to 10 at a time. They are carnivorous, with really sharp teeth that help them eat their prey. Despite the many myths about it they do not usually attack human beings…
The French settlers arrived in Louisiana in the 1800s with their dog beauceron. They told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp. It is thought the Beauceron and Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula. One theory as to the origins of the breed states that the Catahoula is thought to have descended from "war dogs" (Mastiffs and Greyhounds) brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. Dogs left…
By the mid-1930’s the gray wolf (Canis lupis) had been extirpated from its natural habitat in Yellowstone National Park through hunting, trapping, and poisoning in attempt to control predator populations (Phillips 1997). Their extirpation allowed elk (Cervus elaphus) populations to reach high numbers because they were no longer mediated by a predator and could not be controlled by human hunting (Kauffman 2010). The park attempted to cull elk numbers after becoming concerned about their impact…
Cordelia Dallam Mrs. Dwiggins Computers 9/19/14 The Alaskan Malamute The Alaskan Malamute is the largest and oldest of the Arctic sled dogs, they are the cousin to the Samoyed, Siberian Husky, and American Eskimo dog. The Malamute possess great strength and endurance which helps…
One of the things that distinguish different members of the wolf family (Canis lupus) is the distinctive development of social behavior (Gleason, 2013). Wolves belong to a family or group often referred to as a pack. This structure was originally thought to allow the wolf, a social predator, to take on prey many times its size. New theories, however, are emerging suggesting that the pack strategy maximizes reproductive success and has less to do with hunting (Gleason, 2013). For centuries the…
Wolves hadyn Wolves are amazing animals, but they are also dangerous! They harm many humans and animals in many diffrent ways, so the government should not protect them! Wolves are being troublesome to farmers. Farmers feel like wolves were forced upon them by the government. Sometimes the wolves just kill for no reason.…
